Separating is hard enough in your first language. Doing it in your second, while trying to explain to a stranger what your family expects of you and what you actually want for your children is harder again.
At Melbourne Conflict Solutions we mediate in English, Cantonese, Mandarin and Vietnamese. Not through an interpreter sitting in the corner. In the room, in your language, with an accredited Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner who speaks it.
An interpreter is not the same as a mediator who speaks your language
Interpreters do valuable work, and there are matters where one is essential. But interpreting changes mediation in ways people don’t expect.
It adds a third voice and roughly doubles the time. It also flattens things. Mediation runs on the small stuff, the pause before someone answers, the particular word they choose for “home”, the moment a shoulder drops because they’ve finally been understood. Those things don’t survive translation intact. A mediator working directly in your language hears all of it first-hand, as it happens.
There’s a privacy dimension too. In smaller communities, we have had clients worry about who the interpreter might know. That worry doesn’t help anybody speak freely.
Language is only part of it
Clients often tell us the harder thing to convey isn’t a word, it’s often the context:
- Commitments to parents that you both took on, and that don’t end at separation.
- Property or loans involving relatives overseas.
- Different views about raising children across two households.
- Who gets told about the separation, and when.
When something like this does matter to you, you shouldn’t have to explain it from scratch before you can get to the decision in front of you.
The same process, the same accreditation
Multilingual mediation at MCS isn’t a lesser version of the service. It’s the same accredited process: separate intake and screening for each of you, individual pre-mediation calls, a structured joint process, and for parenting matters the ability to issue a Section 60I certificate where one is required.
We mediate both parenting and property matters in all four languages. Where we don’t have your language in-house, we’ll arrange a professional interpreter, brief them properly beforehand, and slow the session down to suit. What we won’t do is proceed as though language isn’t affecting things when it clearly is.
